The Storyline
The Tooth Fairy is a 2010 Hollywood movie that tells the story of Derek Thompson, a minor league hockey player who is known for his brutal hits and unsportsmanlike conduct. But his life takes an unexpected turn when he accidentally injures a young fan and is sentenced to one week as a real-life tooth fairy.
The Plot
The movie starts with Derek Thompson, played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, being interviewed about his upcoming hockey game. Derek’s nickname is “The Tooth Fairy” because he is known for knocking out the teeth of his opponents. One day, he visits a children’s hospital where he meets a young fan named Tess. Later that night, Derek is magically transported to the realm of T.F., or Tooth Fairy Headquarters where he meets Lily (Julie Andrews), the head fairy. Lily sentences him to serve as a tooth fairy for one week after which he will be granted his freedom.
Derek arrives back in the human world with wings and an array of gadgets that are essential for collecting teeth. He has to collect 20 teeth within a week while facing various challenges such as falling into toilets and getting chased by dogs.
The Casts and Characters
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays the lead role of Derek Thompson in the movie. He is supported by an ensemble cast including Julie Andrews as Lily, Ashley Judd as Carly, Ryan Sheckler as Mick Donnelly, and Stephen Merchant as Tracy.
One of the standout performances in the movie is by Billy Crystal who plays the role of Jerry, Derek’s case worker at T.F. Jerry is responsible for training him on how to be a Tooth Fairy and keeping an eye on him during his week-long sentence.
The History
Tooth Fairy was released in 2010 but its origin dates back to 1993 when Jim Piddock came up with the concept. It took almost two decades for the idea to come to fruition. Initially, Larry Guterman was appointed as the director but he was later replaced by Michael Lembeck.
The movie received mixed reviews from critics with many highlighting its predictable plot and cheesy dialogues. However, it managed to gross over $110 million at the box office against a budget of $48 million.
The Opinion
Personally, I found Tooth Fairy to be a mediocre Hollywood comedy that relied too heavily on clichés and tropes. The humor was juvenile at times and the moral message felt forced. However, it did have some redeeming factors such as the chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and Billy Crystal, and the beautiful animation in the Tooth Fairy headquarters.
If you’re a fan of movies like The Santa Clause or Jingle All The Way then Tooth Fairy might be worth a watch. But if you’re looking for something fresh and innovative, then you might want to skip this one.
