I love heist movies because they tend to be full of suspense, action, humor and Topkapi did not disappoint me on any level. It had all the elements I look for in such films – amazing locations from Istanbul, eclectic ensemble cast, intricate plans, gadgets and thrilling heist scenes.

The Gossip Factor
As someone who enjoys celebrity gossip, I found out that Peter Ustinov at one point did not want to do this film because it was being directed by Jules Dassin (who has been accused of communist connections) but eventually agreed after seeing a sample reel Dassin had made for him.
There was also a rumor that Elizabeth Taylor was offered the role of Elizabeth Lipp, but she turned it down. Melina Mercouri stepped in and gave an outstanding performance.
My Analysis and Criticism
The only criticism I have against Topkapi is that some of the characters’ roles were not well developed. For example, Cedric Page’s character seemed one dimensional, and his role was not fully explained. It would have made the movie more exciting if his character had been given more depth.
However, this did not detract from my overall enjoyment of the film or its success as a good heist movie.

Topkapi was produced by Jules Dassin after some convincing by producer Max E. Youngstein. The film’s screenplay was based on Eric Ambler’s novel “The Light of Day.”
