First Impressions of Newness
I recently watched the movie “Newness” and I have to say, it really left an impression on me. From start to finish, I was completely invested in the characters and their story. The movie is a romantic drama that explores the ups and downs of modern dating culture. It’s definitely a movie that resonates with anyone who’s ever tried to navigate the confusing world of online dating.
The Storyline
The plot follows Martin and Gabi, two young adults who meet on a dating app. They quickly hit it off and start a passionate relationship, but soon discover that they both have a difficult time staying committed to one person. As their love affair becomes more complicated, they turn to an open relationship as a way to cope with their issues.
The Casts
The cast of “Newness” is led by Nicholas Hoult and Laia Costa, who both give fantastic performances as Martin and Gabi. They have great chemistry on-screen which makes their characters’ relationship feel genuine and believable. The supporting cast also shines with standout performances from Danny Huston as Martin’s mentor and Courtney Eaton as his ex-girlfriend.
The Cinematography
The movie was beautifully shot, with a lot of attention paid to creating a visual language that reflects the themes of the story. The scenes in Los Angeles are particularly striking with their use of neon lights and urban landscapes. The camera work is also very intimate, often lingering on close-ups of the characters’ faces to capture their emotions.
The Dialogue
One of the strongest aspects of “Newness” is its dialogue, which feels incredibly authentic and true to life. The conversations between Martin and Gabi are fraught with tension as they try to navigate their complicated relationship. There are also moments of humor sprinkled throughout that provide some much-needed levity.
The Criticism
While I thoroughly enjoyed “Newness”, I can see how some people might find the movie frustrating or even problematic. The open relationship storyline could be seen as promoting infidelity or non-monogamy, which isn’t for everyone. Some viewers might also be turned off by the movie’s focus on privileged, attractive young people.
The Evaluation
Overall, I would highly recommend “Newness” to anyone who’s interested in modern romance movies. It offers a fresh take on the genre that feels relevant and timely. It’s not a perfect movie, but its flaws are outweighed by its strengths. If you’re looking for a thought-provoking and visually stunning film, then this one is definitely worth watching.
