Watching “Traffic”: A Mind-Blowing Experience

Traffic movie

When I first heard about “Traffic,” all I knew was that it was a drug-related movie. I had no idea how complex, captivating and thought-provoking it would be. Directed by Steven Soderbergh in 2000, this crime drama has become one of my all-time favorite movies.

The Plot of “Traffic”

The movie is comprised of three interconnected storylines that show the different aspects of the illegal drug trade. The first storyline follows a conservative judge, Robert Wakefield (played by Michael Douglas), who becomes the United States’ new Drug Czar. He discovers the difficulties in fighting drugs when his daughter Caroline (Erika Christensen) becomes a drug addict.

The second storyline takes place in San Diego and follows two DEA agents, Montel Gordon (Don Cheadle) and Ray Castro (Luis Guzmán), as they try to take down a powerful cartel member named Carlos Ayala (Steven Bauer).

The third storyline is about Helena Ayala (Catherine Zeta-Jones), Carlos’s pregnant wife, who tries to keep her family together while her husband is imprisoned for drug trafficking.

The Impressive Cast

The movie’s cast is impressive and consists of many talented actors who give unforgettable performances. Michael Douglas portrays Judge Wakefield as a stern and conservative man, struggling to come to terms with his daughter’s addiction. Catherine Zeta-Jones delivers a powerful performance as Helena, fighting fiercely to protect her husband and her family.

Don Cheadle is outstanding as Agent Gordon, displaying the difficulties that come with being a DEA agent while maintaining his character’s integrity. Finally, Benicio Del Toro plays a Tijuana police officer named Javier Rodriguez who becomes entangled in the fight against drug trafficking and provides a fascinating perspective on the subject.

The Movie’s Structure

“Traffic”‘s unique structure is what makes it so captivating. The three storylines are interwoven flawlessly, allowing the audience to understand how they relate to each other. Watching how one character’s actions impact another character in another storyline is both fascinating and enlightening.

One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when Judge Wakefield confronts his daughter about her addiction. It’s an emotional moment that highlights the struggle of addiction and its impact on both individuals’ lives and families.

The Cinematography

The film’s cinematography is also worth mentioning. The grayish color palette used throughout the movie helps to set a somber tone that suits its serious subject matter. The use of handheld cameras in some scenes gives a sense of urgency, as if the viewer is following along with the characters.

The Soundtrack

The movie’s soundtrack is excellent as well. The music fits perfectly with the various moods and emotions portrayed throughout the film. One track that stands out is “Ay, Rumba!” by Cuban artist Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, which was used during a chase scene in Tijuana.

My Overall Evaluation

“Traffic” is an outstanding movie that excels in every aspect. It’s a crime-drama that tackles a complex issue and manages to deliver a thought-provoking message without being preachy or biased. It tells its story through intertwined storylines with excellent performances from its cast, stunning cinematography and an immersive soundtrack.

This movie has touched me deeply and made me think about the war on drugs in ways I never had before. It’s not just about law enforcement but about understanding how drug addiction can devastate families and communities. It’s a must-watch for anyone interested in movies that make them think.
