Thor: Ragnarok – The Funniest Marvel Film Yet

Thor: Ragnarok image

If you’re a Marvel fan, then you must definitely have seen “Thor: Ragnarok”. This film was released in 2017 and it is directed by Taika Waititi. It stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Cate Blanchett as Hela, and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. At first glance, the trailer looked like it would be one of the darkest movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). But boy were we wrong.

The Storyline And Plot

Storyline image

The movie begins with Thor being held captive by a giant fire demon named Surtur. He is on a quest to defeat Surtur and save Asgard from destruction. Meanwhile, Thor’s adoptive brother Loki is disguised as Odin on Asgard and has taken over the throne.

After defeating Surtur, Thor learns that his father Odin is alive but has been exiled to Earth. Upon arriving on Earth with Loki in tow, they find their father in Norway where he reveals the existence of their half-sister Hela who is hellbent on destroying Asgard.

After Hela destroys Thor’s hammer Mjolnir, he ends up on the planet Sakaar where he is forced to become a gladiator. This is where Thor meets the Hulk who has been missing since “Avengers: Age of Ultron”.

From this point on, Thor and Hulk team up with Valkyrie and Loki to save Asgard from Hela’s grasp and prevent Ragnarok (the end of Asgardian civilization).

The Casts And Characters

Casts image

I must say that the casting in this movie was on point. Chris Hemsworth is perfect as Thor, bringing back the humor that was missing from previous Thor movies. Tom Hiddleston, as always, was an amazing Loki. Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal of the Hulk had fans laughing at his one-liners and Tessa Thompson’s introduction as Valkyrie definitely adds another layer to the MCU.

Cate Blanchett as Hela was amazing. She brought a new level of darkness to the Marvel villains. She was not only powerful but also had a great presence on screen. Jeff Goldblum as The Grandmaster was hilarious and added more comedic relief to the movie.

The Humor

One thing that stands out about “Thor: Ragnarok” is how funny it is compared to other Marvel movies. Taika Waititi infused his signature brand of humor into the movie and it definitely paid off. It’s clear that even though there were many serious moments in the film, the director wanted to make sure that audiences were having a good time throughout. From Thor’s awkwardness when trying to communicate with the Hulk to Korg’s deadpan humor, every scene had something to laugh about.

The Cinematography And Special Effects

Special effects image

The visuals in “Thor: Ragnarok” are stunning. The movie has bright and bold colors which really pop on screen. The special effects are top-notch and the action scenes are well choreographed. The fighting between Thor and Hela was particularly impressive with its use of slow-motion shots.

The Soundtrack And Score

The soundtrack for this movie was amazing. The score was done by Mark Mothersbaugh and it perfectly fit the vibe of the film. There were also some great song choices used throughout, including Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” which was used during one of the most epic fight scenes in the movie.

Popularity And Box Office Success

Box office image

It’s no surprise that “Thor: Ragnarok” was a box office success. In fact, it grossed over $854 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the Thor franchise and the seventh-highest grossing film in the MCU.

The movie was a hit among fans and critics alike. It currently holds an 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 4.5/5 rating from audiences on CinemaScore.

My Evaluation And Opinion

Pros and cons image

As a huge Marvel fan, I must say that “Thor: Ragnarok” is one of my favorite Marvel movies to date. I loved how Taika Waititi added humor to the movie without taking away from its serious moments and themes. The cast was amazing and their chemistry on screen was evident throughout.

However, there were some things that could have been better. The storyline was good but could have been more fleshed out since there were many new characters introduced in this movie. Also, some of the humor might not hit well with everyone as humor is subjective.

Final Thoughts
