Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine: One of the Funniest Movies Ever Made

If you’re a fan of campy, ridiculous movies that make absolutely no sense but still manage to entertain, then you need to watch “Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine.” This 1965 comedy stars Vincent Price as Dr. Goldfoot, a mad scientist with a plan to create an army of beautiful, bikini-clad robots to carry out his evil bidding.

The Storyline is Wacky and Over-the-Top

The plot of this movie is completely nonsensical, but that’s part of what makes it so much fun. Dr. Goldfoot creates a machine that can create identical female robots who are programmed to seduce wealthy men and steal their fortunes. This is where things start to get hilarious.

The robots are named after different cities around the world, like Lola Las Vegas and Billie Miami. They’re all played by gorgeous actresses in outrageous bikinis, and they spend most of their screen time gyrating around seductively while carrying out Dr. Goldfoot’s plans.

The Cast is Phenomenal

As I mentioned, Vincent Price plays the titular Dr. Goldfoot and he’s absolutely perfect in the role. He chews the scenery with gusto and clearly has a blast playing such a ridiculous character.

Frankie Avalon co-stars as Craig Gamble, a hapless spy tasked with stopping Dr. Goldfoot’s plan. Avalon isn’t exactly an Oscar-worthy actor, but he brings a lovable goofiness to the role that’s hard not to enjoy.

The Movie is Utterly Ridiculous…But That’s the Point

Let me be clear: “Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine” is not high art. It’s not even good art. But it’s the kind of movie that knows exactly what it is (a silly, goofy comedy) and fully embraces that identity.

There are so many ridiculous moments in this movie that it’s hard to single out just one as the funniest. Whether it’s watching Dr. Goldfoot cackle maniacally while his robots seduce their targets or seeing Frankie Avalon fight off bikini-clad henchwomen with a giant baguette, there’s something delightfully absurd happening on screen at all times.

The Soundtrack is Catchy and Fun

One thing that really elevates “Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine” from being just another forgettable B-movie is the soundtrack. The movie’s theme song, performed by The Supremes, is catchy and fun and perfectly captures the movie’s playful spirit.

There are also several other musical numbers throughout the movie that range from silly to surprisingly impressive. For example, there’s a scene where one of Dr. Goldfoot’s robots performs a nightclub act that involves singing and dancing while wearing a giant fake frog head. It makes no sense, but it’s kind of amazing to watch.

The Movie Hasn’t Aged Well

It’s worth noting that “Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine” was made in 1965 and certain elements of the movie have not aged well. There’s a lot of sexism on display here–the female robots are blatantly objectified and there are several scenes where women are treated as nothing more than eye candy for the male characters.

If you’re someone who can’t stomach outdated attitudes towards gender and sexuality, this might not be the movie for you.

But Who Cares?

Despite its flaws, I absolutely adore “Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine.” It’s one of those movies that always puts a smile on my face no matter how many times I watch it. There’s just something so silly and joyful about the whole thing that makes it impossible not to love.

It’s not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s a great movie in its own weird, wonderful way. If you’re in need of a good laugh and don’t mind a healthy dose of camp, give “Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine” a shot–you won’t regret it.
