Remember those good old Disney movies where a furry creature saves the day? Well, That Darn Cat is one of those! Plot and Storyline
The story is set in Boston and revolves around a bank teller named Patricia who suspects that her boss’ wife has been kidnapped. She accidentally finds a message on her cat’s collar that leads her to an abandoned house where she discovers a woman who has been held captive. Patricia reports this to the FBI who then assigns agent Zeke Kelso to investigate the case with the help of her cat. Together, they follow clues and even put themselves in danger until they finally solve the mystery.
The Cast
Haley Mills plays Patricia, a young woman who loves her cat more than anything else. Dean Jones portrays FBI agent Kelso who reluctantly partners with Patricia after realizing that her cat might be the key to solving the crime. The rest of the cast includes Roddy McDowall as Gregory Benson, an eccentric artist; Dorothy Provine as Ingrid Randall Benson, his standoffish wife; and Frank Gorshin as Iggy, a criminal involved in the kidnapping.
Opinion and Evaluation
This movie may not be a masterpiece, but it’s definitely entertaining. It’s a classic Disney movie that showcases the intelligence of cats. As a cat lover, I found myself rooting for DC (short for “Darn Cat”) to help Patricia and Kelso solve the case. The humor is light-hearted, which makes it perfect for family viewing. I also enjoyed the chemistry between Mills and Jones even though their relationship was purely platonic.
One thing that bothered me though was how easily Patricia was able to break into Benson’s house without getting caught by his security system. It just seemed too convenient for the plot.
Cinematography and Soundtrack
The movie was shot in black and white which adds to its charm and retro feel. The scenes in Boston were well-captured, especially those at night when DC goes out on his own adventures. As for the soundtrack, it’s not particularly memorable except for “That Darn Cat!” song which plays throughout the movie.

Did you know that there were actually ten cats who played DC in the movie? Each cat had a specific talent such as climbing or jumping. Also, the voice actor for DC was actually a human imitating a Siamese cat’s meow!
